Of all the videos I’ve made in the world, from the slums of India to the hoods in Karachi, Pakistan, for some reason, this experience hit me the hardest. There’s a lot to process here. I’ve seen poverty much worse than Kensington, but I've never experienced such an abandonment of humanity.
Buddy is doing amazing work. Let’s hope we’re at the bottom here and things start moving in the right direction. Thanks to all of you who participated in this video! You’ve helped open our eyes.
Buddy never asked for it, but if you like what he's doing, you can donate here: www.therockphilly.org/. Like any donation, do your research first; I can't be responsible for where the money goes.

Because accepting you can't solve a problem yourself ironically often is a key that opens a door to long sought freedom from a problem. That, right then us when you miraculously 'get' a solution you just couldn't find, with all your striving and trying to make it happen yourself. Also, 'God' can be understood in Very different ways by people. For some, it just means the life force in everything or balance in nature.

(and therefore are alot more helpful than an imaginary friend).
And also, AA and NA are just dangerous abusive cults, that aren't even effective, and hurt more people than they help.

My prayer for you is that you experience a healing of freedom from your grief and any unmerited guilt you are carrying. God says (Romans 8:1). If we still stand firmly upon this truth (he says we are forgiven), we will be liberated from the spirit of condemnation. Be kind to yourself. And if God speaks to you do something positive with your son's story to honor him and help others.

Thank God one night I got arrested and spent a few days in jail on State Road. I prayed everyday Please God get me out of here and I'll change my life. 5 days later I was released on a year probation and I kept that promise and immediately got into drug and alcohol treatment and got clean. Now instead of going down Kensington for drugs I go down to give out food and talk with people how recovery is possible!! 10 years clean and never plan on going back. I hope to work with The Rock one day too they are an amazing organization in Kensington who truly care and help as much as possible. We are true believers because Jesus is God in the flesh and He loves each of us very much. He carried our sins on the cross, so He could give us His righteousness. He took our punishment and death so He could give us His forgiveness, love and eternal life. He arose again so we could be in right standing with God, just as though we never have sinned. It is the greatest gift in life, Jesus Christ.

I'm on state parole in Pennsylvania for committing home invasion - armed robbery w/ a stolen pistol, among other charges. My background is not drug abuse, it's mental illness and theft. I became dependent on alcohol after release from prison during the covid-19 pandemic and ended up in rehab eventually. After getting out of rehab I was in transitional living near Philly and heard lots of war stories about Kensington. I was told to never go there. I often thought during that time that someone needs to do some investigative journalism or do a documentary there. I'm a writer myself, so of course I was intrigued. I never got within 10 city blocks of Kensington. I could never go there on my own and start asking questions. ThankYou for doing this, Peter. Outstanding work. God Bless.

I just donated to The Rock ministries. I wasn't a Christian for 38 years of my life, but then in 2019, I gave my life to Jesus. I know many reading this will eye roll, believe me, I used to eye roll too. I was a militant atheist, turned atheist, then stoic for most of my adult life until I went through a mental health crisis while in the military. My stoicism didn't prepare me to handle the stress and I was prescribed some of the worst anti-depressants and sleep medicines. I can definitely see how people fall into drug abuse, so I'm empathetic to many people in this video despite how hard it to watch. Thank God for The Rock ministry. So much hope and apostolic work being done.

Started with weed at 16, about 10x a day till age 19, where I decided I needed help and checked myself in to rehab. Everyone was laughing at me, after all, they were in for heroine and crack, but the "stoner kid" needed help.
One old man, with no teeth sat me down, told me not to listen to them and told me he started just like me and only wished he had the chance I had. This struck home for me. He helped me fight all the way, we became pretty close. He was clean 6 months when he left, he seemed fine, he OD'd and died 3 weeks later.
I have not touched any drugs ever since. Never. I did struggle with alcohol a little, but fighting to be a good dad and be healthy for my kids first, is what saved me.
In French we say "si jeunesse savant et si Vieillesse pouvait", if the youth knew and if the elderly could.
Stay away kids...just stay away, there is no shortcut. Want a high? Go to the gym, tell someone you love them, save a life. It takes time, it's painful, it takes courage, but SO IS LIFE.
    No shortcuts.

I will be using it as a policy paper topic. Thank you so much for your work. That’s exactly right, we are compassionate people and understand to an extent but what’s on paper is not helping in reality and this is what they won’t show. These politicians and people passing these laws need to be dragged here for a good 24hours to oversee what’s going on and see how compassionate they want to be afterwards. Pure BS!

I work for one of the utility company’s in the city. It requires me to be in and around the Kensington area frequently. The situations inside some of the homes within Kensington is just as bad as the streets. Flea infestations, broken sewage pipes, animal feces, malnourished pets, etc. I’ve walked out of homes covered in fleas. I’ve witnessed animal abuse. It’s so shameful that this behavior has become so common. My heart breaks for my hometown.

I hear you. Long ago I used to install Direct TV or HBO antennas. Yeah Kensington and surrounding areas were real eye openers. I was raised in the far northeast so I wasn't accustomed to such things. I had a summer job once taking baby pictures for some photo outfit. I had an address that took me to a hole in a wall that used to be a corner general store in Kensington. I met them outside and they brought me in through that hole in the wall into what looked like a bombed out scene in a WWII movie. The sat the 3 yr old on a cardboard box that happened to be there and said take the picture. Trying to get the kid to smile they would say "smile for the man 'Fat Man' " That's what they called him as his name! Yeah, like you I have seen animals locked in feces loaded basements, severe hoarding and on and on. It is truly unbelievable.

Constantly hearing “Jesus is here for you,” when I’ve seen so many believes get cancer and die painfully just doesn’t work for me or some other people. I have questioned my faith many times due to tragic events such as losing some of the most amazing, genuine, beautiful people I had the privilege to call them my friend. I also have had many situations thar were going bad, but ended with positive result. Those experiences are what keeps my faith alive.

      To 🐄
Every person alive today, will have died in 100 years, whether miraculously healed at times, or not. Faith in God isn't about Him making things how we want them to be. It's knowing He loves us, and changes us spiritually on the inside, to have His love in us to live out our days.
Though Jesus is the Light of the World, He died. (&came back to life) ALL will eventually die. We believe because Jesus is Life, we will live with Him.
May God answer ALL the questions of your heart.❤

I was raised in Kensington in the late 80’s. I can attest to the members at Rock ministries they take the kids in from the neighborhood and teach them to box and give them hope. I moved out of Kensington in the early 90’s to Port Richmond and raised my 3 sons for 15 years and now I moved to Deleware. I’m still proud to say I’m from Kensington.

If you left in the early 90s, and he said he started rock ministry 20 years ago, and it's 2024, 🤔🤔🤔. That makes you at the very least 10 years off. Cause for it to be early 90s, it'd have to be 94 or lower, cause 95 is mid, and above is late. Plus you gotta add the 3 or 4 years in the 20s. I guess you could go back to visit or have friends/family that have experience with them, but I have a feeling you're just living in an internet fantasy life. Thanks for sharing though 😊.

@@josephjones5552 This video is so biased. Man gets a tour from a "pastor." These are some of the most delusional, narcissistic, "R words" on the planet. Look at how bro is saying he can help any and everyone. Think about how he's saying they don't want help.
I'm not an authority and he *did* mention people getting hooked because of injuries, but a lot of these *PEOPLE* see Reality for what it is; Bull💩.
A lot of people don't want help because *On God* they understand "getting help" means going back to be a wage slave, doing the same 💩 everyday, having no true friends, etcetera of the Modern Day.
The drugs aren't the problem, it's just a form of cope. What pisses me off the most is how those who don't understand this tend to still be rats in the race. These people are f'd up, but they're not all f'd up; They're Actually Smart. They're Griefing at the Game of Life, well, with the rules we have now.
Lastly I'll...nobody reads long posts anyway, imagine you go to jail over some bull💩, now you have a record, now you can't get a job, you were already poor; A lot of people are playing with 💩 cards and this is their escape. This city is incredibly corrupt it's not even funny. This dude from the Rock most definitely gets tax breaks and donations.
Lastly *LASTLY,* why isn't he welcoming in grown Men to learn and box❓🤔 You fix the adults and the kids will follow.
What a d🍆ckhead. This video is lame.
Edit: I'm not religious at all, but I do know that you're not supposed to judge others as you wouldn't yourself. Look at the way the Rock dude says this or that about people, like bro stfu, he can't even listen to people talk without interrupting them and offering "help." He's just an enabler in a saint skin. There's *MANY* reasons people do anything.
🤦🏾‍♂️ Why am I even writing this...

I work as a Drug and Alcohol counselor about 25 miles from this part of Philadelphia. Many (and I mean most) of our patients have housing insecurity and come from, or have spent significant amounts of time in Kensington. I have been saying to anyone who will listen what Buddy lays out at the 43 minute mark. We need systems in place to support these people that go beyond just detox and 12-step meetings. It's heart breaking and at the same time immensely gratifying to have conversations daily with people trying to better themselves and their lives. Thank you for shining the light on this issue.

Yes we absolutely need more then just 30 day rehab and meetings and the one thing that was said is they are going to build a centralized area where all services are in one place which could be a tremendous help for people. They would have detox, rehab, mental health services, social services and recovery plan partners all in one instead of spread out all over the city. You can not detox and in 30 days be placed back out in the same environment with no way of getting to and from different appointments for different services or having to wait for appointments at different times. Plans need to be in place for everything before detox even begins or it will just be a revolving cycle. I hope this new plan can save people. It will not save everyone but it will give a better chance to so many.

Btw Kensington IS NOT an "open air drug market" Good luck with that lie of an idea for any drug seekers. The only drugs obtainable in that part of Philadelphia "easily" is heroin and fentanyl. TWO drugs out of the hundreds that exist on this planet. No other drugs with be found there, therefore it isn't much of a market. A market that sells only two types of the product isn't really a shopping mall, these out of towners just keep on exaggerating.

I think it’s about keeping these detox/methadone jobs in business. How many are employed in the welfare industry? They’ll lose their jobs so they need to keep folks under.

You can have alllllllll the detox in the world honey it won’t do a damn thing unless they WANT to go and none of them do! Most drug addicts are beyond help especially the ones who have lost everything and aren’t cognitive able anymore. Enabling and letting drugs be legal are the primary problem.

And that is the issue most people don't want to address. It is easy to be outraged at this, blame whoever you want to politically, but in the end the solutions that are needed are societal. It is very easy to go down the whole "blue city bad" trope but the issues here are so massively beyond that and need fixed, as I said, at a systmic/societal level.
Punishment, IMO, is not the answer. Stricter enforcement almost never works. You have to root out what leads to this in the first place which is in a ton of cases poverty. Poverty breeds the conditions that lead to these conditions and put you in a downward spiral.
You will never 100% fix everyone and everything, but what we do currently just isn't working and I really do feel bad for city/local governments who get blamed for this but are mostly powerless to implement actual fixes to this.
